Bedding industry

There’s much more than mattresses

When you talk about sleeping, you immediately picture a mattress- that fundamental element, which can affect both positively and negatively the quality of your sleep. In fact, there is more than just mattresses in the so-called bedding industry.

ISPA- International Sleep Products Association defines it as:

“a generic term for a mattress and foundation set, but may also apply to accessory items such as blankets, sheets, pillows, comforters, mattress pads, etc.”

As the bedding industry includes various products, which differ from each another for dimensions and characteristics, the ISPA created the Voluntary Dimensional Guidelines for Bedding Products and Components with the aim of guiding producers and consumers.
The guidelines also have a glossary of common sleep products, which include the following terms:

  1. Headboard and footboard: elements to be attached at the bed frame, they have mainly a decorative function. Their origin dates back to the Fifteenth Century- at that time the bed structure was already closed on all sides, in order to transform the bed into a storage bed. Today there are various types of headboard and footboard made of different materials, such as wood, metal, or upholstery

  2.  Bed foundation: it supports the mattress, and it influences the quality of sleep. Over the years, bed foundations have been changing to keep pace with the evolution of mattresses and to offer high comfort levels. At the beginning of the Twentieth Century, wooden bed foundations, which had been used until then, were replaced by metal bed foundations as metal was easier to clean and more hygienic. However, metal bed foundations used to deform over time because of wear. For this reason, metal bed foundations were reinforced, and wooden bed foundations or aluminum bed foundations were introduced. Today, wood slat foundations are widely used, as they have a strong structure and good elasticity. In the bed foundation evaluation process, it is important to consider the type of mattress which they must support

  3. Bed base: it is the base for the mattress which can also replace the bed foundation. There are various types of bed bases:
box springs: they consist of a wood or metal frame with coils covered with upholstery on which the mattress can be kept directly. They are better shock absorber and increase mattress breathability
platform beds: consisting of a solid wood or metal surface, they may have storage drawers. They are simple and versatile, and they work with any mattress type. There is a wide range of platform beds available on the market, such as upholstered platform bed bases in many colors and options

All the aforementioned elements, which have different dimensions and characteristics are part of the bed and each of them plays its role in increasing comfort and guaranteeing good quality sleep. It is good to remember that such elements may vary in dimension according to national standards and regulations; therefore, there may be huge differences depending on the country.

What do they have in common?

Although they differ from each other, the products of the bedding industry have some common features: they are rigid, bulky, and heavy products. As they are mainly sold to the final consumer, the packaging must be both functional to protect the product as well as professional appearance. As such products can be easily damaged during handling and transportation, the packaging must be resistant and protect them from small damages and scratches.
